BIOGRAPHY
Monica Sholar was born on July 10, 1981 in Detroit, Michigan. Raised by a musical family which consisted of her parents, two older brothers and younger sister, it wasn’t long before she was singing in the choir and taking up modern dancing. After graduating from the Detroit High School for the Fine and Performing Arts, she spent a short time in New York in search of artistic success. Finding stable work as a modern dancer, while living in a three bedroom apartment with her brother and three of his friends was a tumultuous task that proved to be too much for the young artist. She decided to return to Michigan and soon after, conquered corporate America by becoming one of the youngest sales managers in her region for a national hotel chain.
Networking was something that came naturally to Ms. Sholar and she used that skill to earn a spot working for a Fortune 500 payroll company. It is here that she discovered her undeniable talent for writing. What began as an email saga between co-workers, blossomed into the writer’s very first work of fiction entitled No Pie in the Sky. This was the beginning of her road to success. To fund her newfound goal of becoming a self-published author, she took odd jobs modeling for various fashion designers throughout the state of Michigan. This side-gig was the platform she used as exposure to the intimate side of the professional circuit.
Sholar began hostessing at industry parties for the likes of Russell Simmons as well as many of Detroit's elite. Being behind the scenes and witnessing the exemplary display of skill that these individuals possessed, was just the fuel that she needed to propel herself forward. Ms. Sholar eventually took on a third job with a national retail chain in order to aid in the funding of her dream. Finally, after three long years, her efforts began to pay off. She became the president of Eden Life Publishing Company where she has self-published her novels No Pie In The Skyand Loves Me Loves Me Not. The 24th Letter, set to be released in the spring of 2012, will be the third of her signature fiction series for which she coined the term "Emo-Thriller."
In 2009, Monica partnered with SuVon Treece of Artistic Expressions Gallery as founders of the Evening of Art, Literature and Charity. The original plan for this venture was merely to present their own works and donate a portion of the proceeds to charity. These extraordinary women instead made a collaborative effort to extend this opportunity to other artists; a decision that would result in the showcasing of many outstanding and noteworthy individuals. Since that establishment, the event has grown tremendously, drawing in crowds of more than 500 supporters and fans. The EALC has become a tradition that Detroiters and residents of the surrounding cities embrace and look forward to each year.
Ms. Sholar continues to work tirelessly to break barriers and defy the statics of African American women who, just like herself, were raised inside urban city limits. Her work has touched the hearts of many and, as long as there are smiles to be had, she will carry on with her effortless execution at bringing them to the faces of her readers and loyal fans.
The 3rd Evening of Art, Literature and Charity will be held on May 5, 2012. Please visit www.artlitcharity.com for more information.
